During the opening of the 10th World Internet Conference Wuzhen Summit, the Wuzhen World Internet Science and Technology Museum officially opened its doors.Commissioned by Silkroad Vision, MOUJITI created a large-scale naked-eye 3D interactive art installation for the museum’s central atrium.

The imagery portrays the convergence and collision between the Grand Canal and the waves of internet civilization, giving rise to a digital transformation that leads the trend of the times.

The visuals weave together elements such as traditional Chinese ink painting, calligraphy, particle information flows, and architectural landscapes of Wuzhen. Through technologies like generative art and real-time interaction, they guide viewers to experience the allure of “harmonious integration” between human civilization and the internet age.

The Wuzhen Internet Science and Technology Museum is the first large-scale science and technology museum themed around the internet, presenting the past, present, and future of its development from a global perspective. The atrium installation, located at the heart of the first floor, serves as the museum’s central hub. Against this backdrop, artist Fei Jun and his team focused on the thematic positioning, local culture, and presentation formats to conceive and produce a multi-layered experiential work.

In Chinese culture, water embodies gentleness and inclusiveness, much like the internet, which quietly transforms the way people live. The team drew inspiration from the waters of the Grand Canal as the central element, symbolizing humanity’s shared course of civilization while reflecting the cultural depth of water as both a philosophical and aesthetic motif in Chinese tradition.

A drop of ink falls, giving rise to multiple water clusters that branch into delicate networks and tributaries. The flowing forms possess the graceful, fluid rhythm of cursive calligraphy, ultimately converging into rivers.

The ink-toned water clusters metaphorically represent Wuzhen and other canal cities, with scenes of interconnected waterways drawing on the form and rhythm of calligraphy to convey a spirit that is both powerful and graceful.

The water sources transform into vibrant digital particles that interconnect to form an inseparable network—a digital life community. This not only embodies the aesthetic qualities of digitalization but also symbolizes the era of interconnectedness and co-existence among all things.

Wuzhen was born on the Grand Canal, connecting five major water systems across four provinces and two cities. Today, Wuzhen also stands witness to the transformation of the internet world as the permanent venue of the World Internet Conference. By blending the rich heritage of the Jiangnan water town with the DNA of the internet, the team has created an artistic digital twin city.

This twin city is composed of foundational elements of Wuzhen’s traditional residential architecture—foundations, doors and windows, roofs, horse-head walls, bridges, and more. Each element represents a different theme in the development of the internet world, emphasizing the importance of technology, culture, economy, security, and collaboration within cyberspace.

It also stands as a digital milestone, witnessing the past and future of the internet from a local perspective.

The public area on the first floor is a mandatory passage for visitors, and the atrium installation also serves as a visual guide. The team reinterpreted elements such as Wuzhen’s cultural relics and internet technology, using three dynamic sculptures to represent the themes of the museum’s three main zones. This skillfully integrates tradition with modernity, history with technology, offering visitors a unique visual and spiritual experience.

To enrich the layers of experience and enhance immersion, the team specially incorporated a real-time interactive segment. Visitors can simply touch the screen in front of the installation to control changes in the large-scale visuals. This design—where small actions lead to significant effects—cleverly echoes the internet’s characteristic of driving global transformation through data.
Swipe to view images of the “interactive interface.”
The interactive interface allows viewers to access interpretations and explanations of each visual layer, helping them better understand the display’s logic and underlying meaning.

The team designed a mini-program called “Setting Sail with the Rowboat,” aiming to let every visitor leave a mark of their visit and deepen their sense of participation. Visitors can scan a QR code to select a message online, which will generate a Wuzhen rowboat carrying their message. The boat then gently sails across the screen, conveying humanity’s hopeful wishes for the future development of the internet.

Based on the overall spatial design, the team needed to create naked-eye 3D effects across a 15-meter-tall, four-sided screen spanning all three floors of the museum, while simultaneously coordinating with the surrounding curved screens. The immense scale and the semi-open-ended nature of the display posed a significant challenge for the design team.

Thus, guided by the design concept of “a drop of water as the starting point, with the twin city nurtured within water,” the team utilized a combination of hand-drawing, AIGC generation, software simulations, and various visual modeling and logical verifications to initially complete a rich and detailed structural and visual design.

Using fluid and particle effect software such as Houdini and X-Particle, the dynamic evolution of water was simulated.

To ensure that visitors along the main circulation path enjoy the best viewing experience, the team designed a core interactive area and designated the north entrance as the primary viewpoint. This maximizes the effective field of view, allowing visitors to fully and deeply appreciate and engage with the interactive visuals throughout their visit.
