“万化同源——珠江口区域的四个历史时空”展是深圳市南头古城保护与利用项目的重点文化叙事载体,目前已于 2020 年 8 月 26 日面向公众开放。直径叙事(DND)受万科集团(Vanke)委托,全权负责该展览的策展与展览设计。
The exhibition “Diversification from a Common Origin – Four Historical Spaces and Times at the Pearl River Estuary” serves as a key cultural narrative carrier for the Nantou Ancient City Protection and Utilization Project in Shenzhen, and it has been open to the public since August 26, 2020. Diameter Narrative Design (DND) was entrusted by Vanke to fully oversee the curatorial and exhibition design of this exhibition.
基于南头古城的政策定位,我们将“同源”的策展概念拓展为珠江口区域开放、多元、包容和汇同的文化特征,并通过“山海同貌”、“经济同体”、“文化同心”和“行政同属”四个视角分别解读。面对展馆空间条件、展品条件和时间条件的真实困难,将展览设计方向规划为“一个艺术性历史主题展”,以超级报纸(super flat)为设计概念重织时空,实现内容、空间与展品的“全景式”体验。
Based on the policy positioning of Nantou Ancient City, we extend the “cognate” curatorial concept to the cultural characteristics of openness, diversity, inclusiveness, and convergence in the Pearl River Estuary region, and interpret it from four perspectives: “Mountain and Sea Sharing a Look,” “Economy as One,” “Culture Sharing a Heart,” and “Administration Belonging Together.” Facing the real difficulties of exhibition space conditions, exhibit conditions, and time constraints, the exhibition design direction is planned as “an artistic historical theme exhibition,” using the design concept of a “super flat” to reweave time and space, achieving a “panoramic” experience of content, space, and exhibits.








策展思路:从历史的同源到展览的“同源”
Curatorial Approach: From Historical Homologous Relationships to Exhibition “Homologous” Relationships
直径叙事团队在持续大半年的策展研究和与专家多轮沟通之下,发现珠江口地区的“同源”与通常意义上的“同源”有着本质的区别。基于“三江汇聚,八口分流”的地理特征,这里是广府、客家、福佬、疍家等多个民系汇集的地方,海洋文化与大陆文化在这里交叠,中国、南洋和西方的资源在这里交易……在历史的不断沉淀中,渐渐孕育出了一种开放、交融而丰富多彩的文化性格。因此,这个展览中所指的“同源”,是指把珠江口区域丰富多彩的社会文化与该地区开放包容的内在精神当成了一种“源头”。
After more than half a year of curatorial research and multiple rounds of communication with experts, the Diameter Narrative team discovered that the “common origin” in the Pearl River Estuary region is fundamentally different from the commonly understood “common origin”. Based on the geographical feature of “three rivers converge and eight estuaries diverge”, this area is a melting pot of various ethnic groups such as Guangfu, Hakka, Fulao, and Danjia. Marine culture and mainland culture overlap here, and resources from China, Southeast Asia, and the West are traded here… Over time, through the continuous accumulation of history, an open, integrated, and rich cultural character has gradually emerged. Therefore, the “common origin” referred to in this exhibition signifies the rich and diverse social culture of the Pearl River Estuary region and the region’s inherent spirit of openness and inclusiveness as a “source”.

Spatial Comparison: Viewing An Exhibition From Within An Urban Village
距今有近两千年历史的南头古城也随时代变迁成为一个影响力衰退、拥挤且待改造的城中村,而此次临展空间则位于村中难得的大体量空间。因此,在设计之初我们就设想当观众从人头攒动的南头古城进入展览时,开阔、规整与空旷的临展空间能为他们制造空间体验的反差,让馆内的空旷静谧与馆外的拥挤喧闹形成对比。

Design Strategy: Viewing The Exhibition From Inside The Museum
3.1 “同源全景”
3.1 “Homologous Panorama”

此次展览并不是由很多件展品构成,而是通过一个全景式展品,来实现空间全景、展品全景和内容全景的统一。首先团队并未用设置隔墙等常规手段来破坏空间的完整性。其次,置于地面的“报纸”母体同时作为形式和内容整合了展览的所有信息,装置与投影依托于报纸母体进一步回应了主题,而专家采访则是从报纸上延伸出的讨论与对话,此外无限循环的栈桥将行走的观众纳入展览之中。
This exhibition is not composed of numerous exhibits, but achieves the unity of spatial panorama, exhibit panorama, and content panorama through a panoramic exhibit. Firstly, the team did not use conventional methods such as setting up partitions to destroy the integrity of the space. Secondly, the “newspaper” matrix placed on the ground integrates all the information of the exhibition both in form and content. The installation and projection rely on the newspaper matrix to further respond to the theme, while expert interviews are discussions and dialogues extending from the newspaper. In addition, the infinitely looping trestle incorporates the walking audience into the exhibition.
3.2 超级报纸,重织时空
3.2 Super Newspaper, Re-weaving Space-time

一般来讲,报纸的特点是同一个主题可以有不同的版面与分区,多样化的内容格式,并可以实现穿越和编辑时空。而“超级报纸”可以做到尺度放大多倍,图像动态化,插图三维化,内容的电子化延伸。因此,整个展厅的所有存在都变成了其中的一部分:从地面到空间,从静态到动态,从平面到立体,从过去到当下,从展览到观众。
Generally speaking, the characteristics of newspapers are that the same theme can have different layouts and sections, diversified content formats, and the ability to traverse and edit through time and space. However, “super newspapers” can achieve multiple scales, dynamic images, three-dimensional illustrations, and electronic extension of content. Therefore, all elements in the entire exhibition hall become a part of it: from the ground to the space, from static to dynamic, from two-dimensional to three-dimensional, from the past to the present, and from the exhibition to the audience.
3.3 栈桥与海浪声,情感的回归
3.3 Jetty And The Sound Of Waves, A Return Of Emotions

栈桥高于报纸母体一定距离,桥下装有扬声器。观众在观展的过程中,可以听到栈桥下的潮水声,配合闪烁的呼吸灯,仿佛置身于海岸边。视听交错,实现理智与情感的交融。而观众脚下的出发点也是最终的回归点,他们恰好用行为回应了“同源”的主题。
The trestle is elevated a certain distance above the newspaper matrix, and speakers are installed beneath it. During the exhibition, visitors can hear the sound of the tide under the trestle, accompanied by flickering breathing lights, as if they were standing on the coast. The audio and visual interplay achieves a fusion of reason and emotion. The starting point beneath the visitors’ feet is also their ultimate return point, and their actions perfectly echo the theme of “homologous”.
3.4 艺术装置,主题内容的立体化表达
3.4 Artistic installations, three-dimensional expression of thematic content
我们依托于报纸的内容,用艺术的手法进行了装置化的表达,以下内容是对装置生成过程的解读。
We have utilized artistic techniques to express the content of the newspaper in an installation-like manner. The following content provides an interpretation of the process of generating the installation.

装置1:气象事件回顾
Device 1: Review Of Meteorological Events
或许万亿年的时空演变我们无法亲眼所见,大自然中的山岭树木生命也独立于我们而存在,但是日常天气季节的变换,却是我们所亲身经历的事件。珠江口区域恰好是全国气候变化相对复杂的地区之一,因此我们提取了极端天气这一内容,用屏幕影片的方式重新剪辑气象报道中对本区域重点城市的报道,引起本区域居民与观众的共同记忆。
Perhaps we cannot witness the trillion-year evolution of time and space with our own eyes, and the lives of mountains and trees in nature exist independently of us, but the daily changes in weather and seasons are events we have personally experienced. The Pearl River estuary region happens to be one of the areas with relatively complex climate changes in the country. Therefore, we have extracted the content of extreme weather and re-edited the meteorological reports on key cities in this region through screen videos, evoking the shared memories of residents and viewers in this area.


装置2:南头的权利空间
Device 2: The Rights Space at Nantou
盐在中国古代有着非常重要的地位,中央政权对南头的管辖也始于对盐的控制,从而进一步覆盖到行政、海防、经济、军事等各个层面。我们通过这组地图装置展示南头在历史上权力机构管辖范围的变迁,让观众得以更加清晰地理解历史上以南头为核心的古代珠江口东岸区域的建制更替。
Salt held a very important position in ancient China, and the central government’s jurisdiction over Nantou began with the control of salt, which further extended to various aspects such as administration, coastal defense, economy, and military. Through this set of map installations, we showcase the changes in the jurisdiction of Nantou over history, allowing the audience to more clearly understand the institutional changes in the ancient eastern coastal region of the Pearl River Estuary centered around Nantou.


装置3:明清时期珠江口的贸易网络
Device 3: The trade network at the Pearl River estuary during the Ming and Qing dynasties
天下熙熙皆为利来,天下攘攘皆为利往。明清时期,由朝贡贸易到商舶贸易的转换、私人贸易活动与朝廷的政策及地方官府的矛盾交织、从珠江口辐射的海洋贸易与内河贸易等因素,共同造就了珠江口的贸易前沿地位。我们将明清变化的航线路径做成立体的网络联结,希望带领观众一窥珠江口在世界贸易中所扮演的重要角色。
All people in the world come for profit, and all go back to profit. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, factors such as the transition from tributary trade to merchant ship trade, the intertwined contradictions between private trade activities and imperial policies as well as local government regulations, and the marine and inland river trade radiating from the Pearl River Estuary jointly contributed to the trade frontier status of the Pearl River Estuary. We have created a three-dimensional network connection of the changing shipping routes during the Ming and Qing dynasties, hoping to give viewers a glimpse of the important role played by the Pearl River Estuary in world trade.


装置4:珠江口不同族群的集体记忆
Device 4: Collective Memory of Different Ethnic Groups at the Mouth of the Pearl River
何以为家,故土是人永远的心灵归属。珠江口地区多族群汇聚,客家人、广府人、疍民与潮汕人在这里生活并创造着本区域的历史,相框装置留下了他们不同时期的历史影像。而珠江口也是深港澳频繁互迁与交往的区域,华侨从这里赴洋游走世界,四海为家。信件装置承载着珠江游子远洋漂泊与异国奋斗的往事。相框与信件串联起的生活记忆,是中原族群汇入珠江口地区以及辗转移民到世界各地仍心挂家乡的见证。
What constitutes a home? The native land is the eternal spiritual belonging of people. The Pearl River Estuary region is a melting pot of diverse ethnic groups, where Hakka people, Cantonese people, Tanka people, and Chaoshan people live and create the history of this region. The photo frame installations preserve their historical images from different periods. The Pearl River Estuary is also a region where Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Macao have frequently migrated and interacted. Overseas Chinese have traveled the world from here, making the world their home. The letter installations carry the memories of the Pearl River wanderers who drifted far away and struggled in foreign countries. The life memories connected by photo frames and letters are a testament to the Central Plains ethnic groups who migrated into the Pearl River Estuary region and the displaced immigrants who traveled to various parts of the world, yet still yearn for their hometown.




3.5 专家采访,基于报纸内容的延伸
3.5 Expert interviews, an extension based on newspaper content
观众于展馆内游览,会在栈桥的不同方向看到来自八位专家的十一个话题采访。通过与专家对话的形式,延伸了报纸内容,使观众从专家的视角思考,完成了沟通交流的更进一步,从而最终完成了整场展览的体验。
As visitors tour the exhibition hall, they will see interviews on eleven topics conducted by eight experts from different directions on the trestle. Through dialogues with the experts, the newspaper content is extended, allowing visitors to think from the experts’ perspectives and furthering the communication and exchange, ultimately completing the experience of the entire exhibition.

To be continued: The “Wanhua Tongyuan” exhibition is not the end of our exploration of Nantou Ancient City
南头古城拥有漫长的历史积淀,完好的古城基底与一定的国际影响力,“万化同源——珠江口区域的四个历史时空”展并不是我们对南头历史探索的终点。直径叙事团队即将完成南头古城“同源馆”的策展设计,我们以“珠江口的性格特征”为隐形的总体叙事目标,同时注重历史与今天的关联。希望此次的参与合作能诞生新的设计创意,推动古城历史的再生,焕发文化活力。
Nantou Ancient City boasts a long history, a well-preserved ancient city foundation, and a certain international influence. The exhibition “Wanhua Tongyuan – Four Historical Spaces in the Pearl River Estuary Region” is not the end of our exploration of Nantou’s history. The Diameter Narrative Team is about to complete the curatorial design for the “Tongyuan Pavilion” in Nantou Ancient City. We take “the character traits of the Pearl River Estuary” as the invisible overall narrative goal, while paying attention to the connection between history and today. We hope that this collaborative participation will give birth to new design ideas, promote the regeneration of the ancient city’s history, and revitalize cultural vitality.
