Victory Fitness sees each club as more than a place to exercise: it is also a setting for energy, identity and cultural connection. Its Guangzhou Poly Yuzhu club stands near the historic port of Yuzhu. The project’s theme, “Origins”, looks back to the brand’s beginnings while expressing the courage to set out again.
D&M uses design to connect members with culture, spirit and physical movement. Imagery from the Maritime Silk Road—lighthouse, sails, water and silk—becomes a restrained spatial language. Together these elements form a place of strength and beauty that looks inward to its origins and outward to new horizons.
A distinctive antler sculpture stands at the corner like a beacon at a Silk Road port, serving as both a brand symbol and a point of orientation.
Arrival · A place to settle
At reception, clear lines and surfaces create a calm arrival. Vertical wall textures suggest the passage of time, while a dark stone counter anchors the space like a reef. Light from above lends the area the quiet reassurance of returning to port.
Sails · A flowing boundary
Curved walls and a rippling ceiling evoke the sea and its sails, while translucent pendants suggest birds crossing the sky. Light moves across metallic surfaces, creating a place for both pause and movement.
Lighthouse · The centre of circulation
The central atrium takes its cue from a lighthouse. Soft light falls from the ceiling and an arched structure establishes the spatial order.
The atrium is both a symbolic landmark and a circulation hub. Three routes lead from it: to the fitness area, the Pilates and yoga rooms, and the more private changing facilities.
Stars · Traces of time
Simple light strips and textured materials create a quiet, star-like atmosphere. Light travels across walls and ceiling, giving the rest area a sense of breadth and calm.
Waves · A dialogue with nature
The cardio area draws on beaches and shorelines. Flowing light strips and mirrored surfaces suggest the movement of waves and tides.
Beyond the curtain wall, sunlight and greenery enter the space. The area supports the rhythm of exercise while connecting members with the city and the natural world.
Oars · Strength and balance
In the strength-training area, a sequence of oar-shaped ceiling elements combines movement with visual tension. Black steel and patterned light create a focused setting.
The design develops a narrative of gathered strength and balance, expressing controlled energy.
Dockyard · A training ground
The personal-training area suggests a place of departure and return. A rectilinear metal frame and gridded illuminated ceiling establish order and concentration.
A boat-shaped training track brings circulation and exercise together. Repeating illuminated frames, mirrored surfaces and changing perspectives heighten the sense of depth and movement.
Whether used for explosive power or agility training, the rhythm of light reinforces a visual language of speed and strength.
In the boxing area, crisp lighting and a display of gloves define a dedicated setting for physical challenge.
Silk · A language of flexibility
The multipurpose studio draws on silk: light, soft and supple like the movements of yoga.
Timber and gentle lighting create a warm, relaxed atmosphere that supports breath and movement.
Changing rooms and wellness room · A warmer atmosphere
Beyond the central “lighthouse”, the changing facilities and wellness room continue the theme of returning to origins through simplicity and natural materials.
Curving timber surfaces create a sheltered, cave-like feeling. Rounded corners and concealed light soften the boundaries of the rooms.
A timber treatment bed stands at the centre of the wellness room. Against restrained walls, it creates a quiet setting for physical and mental relaxation.
Conclusion · A journey to the source
Each setting gathers physical energy and gives expression to an idea. At Yuzhu, Victory Fitness brings the imagery of the Maritime Silk Road together with sport and culture in a complete journey to the source. The club offers a place for both strength and belonging, inviting members to look inward before moving forward.
Client testimonial — Victory Fitness to the D&M design team: We thank D&M for creating an inspiring “journey to the source” at our Poly Yuzhu flagship club. Their understanding of local cultural history, attention to spatial design and connection with our brand gave form to the strength and beauty of the Silk Road. From the angled metal sail at the entrance and the soft light of the atrium to the intensity of the boxing area and the gentle atmosphere of the Pilates studio, the design interprets our theme of returning to origins. The result combines ceremony, function and a clear spatial story.
